US investigates release of classified documents on Israel’s planned attack on Iran

The United States is investigating the unauthorized release of classified documents detailing Israel’s planned attack on Iran, The Associated Press reported.

The documents, attributed to the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, note that Israel was still moving military assets to carry out a military strike in response to the ballistic missile attack by the ‘Iran on October 1. They can be shared within the “Five Eyes”, which are the US, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.

The documents, which are marked top secret, were posted on the Telegram messaging app last week and were first reported by CNN and Axios. The AP first reported on Sunday about the US investigation into the unauthorized release, citing three US officials. The AP said a fourth US official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated the documents appeared legitimate.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., also confirmed the investigation in an appearance on CNN.

“The leak is very troubling. There are some serious allegations being made, there’s an investigation underway, and I’ll have a briefing in a couple of hours,” Johnson said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “There’s a classified-level briefing and then another one. But we’re following it closely.”

The investigation is also looking into how the documents were obtained, including whether it was an intentional leak by a member of the US intelligence community or through another method, such as hacking, and whether compromise any other intelligence information, one of the officials said. AP, adding that officials are working to determine who had access to the documents before releasing them.

The documents first appeared online on Friday via a Telegram channel, claiming to have been leaked by someone in the US intelligence community, then the US Department of Defense. The information appeared to be gathered entirely through the use of satellite image analysis.

The AP reported that one of the two documents resembled the style of other material from the US National Geospatial Intelligence Agency leaked by Jack Teixeira, an Air National Guard agent who pleaded guilty in March to leaking highly classified military documents about Russia’s war against Ukraine and other national security secrets.

The Telegram channel involved in the leak is identified as being based in Tehran, the capital of Iran. He previously posted memes featuring Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and material in support of Tehran’s self-styled “Axis of Resistance,” which includes Middle Eastern terrorist groups armed by the republic islamic

In a statement to the AP, the Pentagon said it was aware of the documents’ reports, but did not elaborate. The AP said the Israeli military did not immediately return a request for comment.
