TUGELA — Suspected Let’s go (killers) were defeated after KwaZulu-Natal police shot and killed four wanted suspects in Mooi River.

The quartet were wanted in connection with taxi-related crimes in and around the province. On Monday 4 November 2024, law enforcement officers tracked the group down the N3 motorway, leading to a high-speed chase.

Provincial Police Spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda law enforcement acted on a tip about the whereabouts of the suspects.

“Police intercepted their vehicle and signaled them to stop. However, the driver sped off, taking the Hidcote turnoff and joining the R103 towards Estcourt,” Netshiunda said.

“The suspects fired at police during the chase. Officers returned fire, fatally wounding them. Two firearms, a rifle and a handgun, and ammunition were recovered.”

One of the alleged perpetrators was a most wanted suspect.

The police wanted the 40-year-old man for the murder of a Taxi the president of the association and his deputy, shot in Bergville in February and June 2024.

“He was also wanted for the murder of a taxi owner at the Bergville taxi rank. A stray bullet hit a commuter during the shooting,” Netshiunda said.

In the same month, in June 2024, a taxi owner in Winterton was shot but survived the shooting. A case of attempted murder was opened.

Firearms recovered will be subjected to ballistics tests to determine a connection to other violent crimes.

“No officers were injured in the exchange of fire, although numerous bullets grazed a police vehicle,” Netshiunda added.
