Caddo DA raises awareness and resources for survivors of domestic violence

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and the Caddo Parish Prosecutor’s Office is raising awareness, collecting resources and offering support.

The DA’s office says their mission is to protect victims and hold criminals accountable.

Domestic violence chief Britney Green says domestic violence is a major crisis in every community because it makes homes unsafe.

“Violence in homes makes those homes unsafe, and we can’t have safe communities if we don’t have safe homes,” she said.

The DA’s office works year-round with advocacy groups such as the Family Justice Center and Project Celebration to raise money and awareness for this issue. Other projects include the Purple Box Campaign, where they work with Caddo libraries to collect hygiene/household items, and the Kick Against Violence Domestic Kickball Tournament, where law enforcement and community organizations raise money for survivors of domestic violence.

For people going through the criminal justice system, Green says they have victim advocates to go to court with survivors and continue to support them.

“For every victim, especially victims of domestic violence, they can appoint a victim support coordinator. Those victim support coordinators are able to attend court with survivors, they can point them in the direction and facilitate counseling.”

Green personally has a long history of working on these types of cases, dating back to the beginning of his legal career. She explained one of her previous cases:

“That day the abuser was found not guilty and it was a day that changed my whole view of domestic violence and what the victims go through and how hard it is to take responsibility for those people who hurt people they would should love them.”

Green says people should educate themselves about the dynamics of domestic violence so they can recognize if someone might need help.

“When you take the time to research and dig into the issue and really become familiar with what’s going on in the perimeters of domestic violence, when we hear about abuse, when someone is going through that, then our response is going to empower victims. to come forward.”
