CNN fact checker says this Donald Trump ad may be the ‘most misleading’ of the 2024 election

CNN fact-checking reporter Daniel Dale on Tuesday broke down a new spot released by the Donald Trump campaign that Dale said “might be the most misleading campaign ad I’ve seen all cycle.”

The video targeted Democratic candidate Kamala Harris’ tax plan.

But it included “two horribly edited quotes plus a made-up statistic,” Dale noted.

The start of the ad pointed to an August article in The New York Times that warned, “Harris is looking to raise taxes significantly.”

Dale emphasized, however, that the full quote was actually: “Harris is looking to significantly raise taxes on the wealthiest Americans and big corporations.”

“So those very important words were edited out,” Dale said.

Elsewhere in the ad, Harris was seen saying that “taxes are going to have to go up.” But as Dale pointed out, the full context of what Harris said in 2019 was that “state taxes are going to have to go up for the wealthiest Americans.”

The ad missed the words “for the wealthiest Americans,” Dale said.

Finally, the pro-Trump ad said Harris’ plan would increase family tax bills by $2,580. He cited the right-leaning Tax Foundation think tank. But the foundation told Dale, “I don’t know where that number came from.”
