Historic US SS in Philadelphia, stolen by suspects in surveillance video

The SS United States, a retired ocean liner docked in Philadelphia, was recently robbed by at least five suspects who sneaked aboard the historic 1950s ship.

Around 1:40 a.m. on Oct. 2, at least three people were captured on surveillance video climbing through an opening in the 990-foot ship’s hull without permission at Pier 82.

Police said the suspects allegedly left the boat about three hours later with several items. The next day, Philadelphia police reported that the alleged marauders stole several batteries and tools, and damaged the boat.

FOX 29 reported that a 17-year-old boy turned himself in after the incident.

The unidentified teenager faces charges of burglary and trespassing.

The Philadelphia Police Department is asking the public if they have any other information on the identity of the other suspects to call or text them at 215-686-TIPS (8477).

The alleged theft came a day after the ship was part of a tentative agreement that approved the SS United States becoming the world’s largest man-made reef in Florida.

The $10 million deal will allow the dilapidated ocean liner to be towed from Philadelphia to Destin-Fort Walton Beach, where it will be scuttled offshore and turned into a scuba diving destination.

Okaloosa County in Florida promised to open a “land museum and immersive experience” established by the SS United States Conservancy.

“Having the opportunity to have the SS United States here on our shores is a heritage and a generational legacy,” said Okaloosa County Commissioner Mel Ponder. “I’m really excited not only for the diving community, but the fishing community, but the community in general.”

The ship still holds the transatlantic speed record from New York to the United Kingdom, which it set more than 70 years ago.
