Colbert County students learn about financial literacy

COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (Waffle) – A Colbert County school system teacher believes the earlier students learn financial literacy, the better.

Students who attend Colbert Heights High School volunteer their time and knowledge to the children at their elementary school.

The program teaches students about needs versus wants, budgeting, and more.

Teacher Teresa Billingsley said more schools should teach financial literacy at younger ages.

“I would like to start teaching them as early as third grade,” she said. “The earlier the better, learning how to manage your money because hopefully it will make them responsible consumers in the future, knowing how to manage their money at a young age.”

According to a survey by credit rating agency S&P, only 57% of adults really understand how to manage their money.
