AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU reveal date could spoil Arrow Lake launch party
AMD’s eventual release of its Ryzen 9000X3D series processors with 3D V cache is arguably the most anticipated CPU lineup launch of the year, and with good reason: the added cache is ideal for to the games That said, if recent leaks and rumors prove accurate, AMD’s presentation could take the spotlight away from Intel’s Core Ultra 200S launch next week.
For anyone who missed it, Intel formally introduced its Core Ultra 200S series, also known as Arrow Lake, last week. The CPU series makes some high-performance and power-efficient claims for the desktop, with Intel touting Arrow Lake as “the coolest and most efficient gaming CPU.” The lineup consists of five CPU models, including the Core Ultra 9 285K, Core Ultra 7 265K, Core Ultra 7 265KF, Core Ultra 5 245K, and Core Ultra 5 245KF.

Sales and pre-orders for Intel’s newest desktop chips will begin next Thursday, October 24. According to several leaks, the latest of which comes from the Chippell Forum, AMD will give Intel its day and then announce the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on Friday, October 25.

This would certainly steal some thunder from Arrow Lake’s desktop retail debut. However, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D announcement is said to be a revelation, with retail availability not expected until November 7th.

Still, it’s not a long wait. Also, we suspect AMD will make some bold claims regarding its first consumer Zen 5 processor that flaunts 3D V cache.

It will be interesting to see how the specs pan out. To that end, a recent leak purporting to show a Ryzen 7 9800X3D in the wild revealed a base clock of 4.7GHz and an all-core boost clock of 5.2GHz while running Cinbench R23.

We can’t say if the leak is legit, but if it is, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will have a faster base clock than the Ryzen 7 9700X, which clocks in at 3.8GHz. Likewise, the leaker claims that the Ryzen 7 9700X runs 400 MHz slower than the Ryzen 7 9800X3D when run on Cinebench R23.

The reason the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is compared in specs to the Ryzen 7 9700X is because there is no such thing as a Ryzen 7 9800X. AMD’s Ryzen 7 9700X is an 8-core/16-thread chip with 8MB of L2 cache and 32MB of L3 cache. The expectation is that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will have the same number of cores and threads, but will obviously have more L3 cache.

Finally, the latest Ryzen 7 9800X3D leak suggests that the boost clock will be “quite high” and that the chip “won’t be cheap.” To add some context, the Ryzen 7 9700X can be had on sale for $324.75 on Amazon, while the Ryzen 9 9900X is $439 (also on sale). The previous generation Ryzen 7 7800X3D is a little harder to find in stock (by a proprietary vendor), but it recently went on sale for $429 at Best Buy.
