The Southern Taurids meteor shower – and the annual celestial spectacle that lights up our skies every autumn – is on full display, but you’ll have to wait until November if you want to see the Southern Taurids in all their glory.

The peak viewing window for the Southern Tauride meteor shower will be overnight Monday, November 4th into the early morning of Tuesday, November 5th.

Here’s what you need to know if you choose to stay up and watch the shower.

What are the Southern Taurides?

“The one Southern Taurides are a long-lasting shower that has several peaks during the activity period. The shower is active for more than two months, but rarely produces more than five shower members per hour, even at peak activity,” the American Meteor Society definition states. “The Taurids (both branches) are rich in fireballs and are often responsible for the increase in fireball reports from September to November.”

Taurid meteors can be seen when the constellation Taurus is above the horizon between September and November, according to NASA.

Lasting for weeks, meteor showers tend to move slowly with greater visibility compared to other meteor showers such as Orion and Perseid.
