Kentucky drivers can now add a special code to their license plate, here’s what it means

KENTUCKY (WFIE) – An optional new program allows Kentucky drivers to add a special code to their vehicle registration.

The code, which is visible only to county clerks and law enforcement, signals potential communication barriers.

“You don’t really put a physical decal on your vehicle,” says Kentucky State Trooper Corey King.

By scanning the license plate, officers can quickly access information about drivers’ communication needs, such as sign language, speech impairment or hearing loss.

“If you’re in a wreck and law enforcement arrives on the scene and executes that tag, it shows there’s a communication barrier,” he says. “If you’re unconscious or seriously injured, we can let the doctors know that this person has or at least is registered this vehicle under the pretense of having some type of disability, and at that point they can adjust accordingly.”

This proactive measure aims to reduce misunderstandings and ensure safer interactions during traffic stops.

Officials say it’s a step toward promoting better communication and understanding between both law enforcement and the community.

“Knowing in advance that we may experience some kind of communication barrier between the driver and us helps a lot more and allows us to step back for a moment and realize the resources we have to really have an effective traffic stop and address what was needed. to be addressed right there, using available resources,” he adds.

The programs are free and voluntary.
