Maricopa County health inspectors cited five Valley restaurants for 26 health violations during the week of Oct. 4. Violations included liquid from a roof leaking into an ice machine and improper food storage.

A priority violation is a significant violation that directly contributes to an increased risk of foodborne illness or injury. If listed in the inspection reports, the resources implemented during the inspection are noted.

During the week of October 4, inspectors visited more than 850 restaurants along with other food service facilities in hospitals, nursing homes and schools. More than 360 restaurants received an “A” rating. See a sampling of the many “A” rated restaurant inspectors at the end of this article.

5 violations

Stellar66, 1829 E. Baseline Road, Gilbert

  • Packaged hot pot pasta made with beef fat had no English label or USDA seal of inspection. The USDA was contacted and the pasta was seized.
  • Whole raw ducks were hung next to whole cooked ducks in a freezer. Raw pork was stored over cooked pork and duck in a refrigerator. Items were reordered.
  • Rice porridge in hot storage had an internal temperature of 123 F. Shrimp balls, BBQ pork buns, and pork balls in steam baskets on a steam table had internal temperatures ranging from between 89 and 125 F. The rice porridge and dumplings were reheated to 165 F.
  • Chinese cabbage, fried chicken, bean sprouts, sliced ​​bok choy, and cooked beef stomach in cold storage units had internal temperatures ranging from 55 F to 72 F. All items were moved to a freezer to cool quickly.
  • A mop faucet with an atmospheric vacuum breaker had a hose attached while not in use. The hose was closed.

Beast of Bourbon Bar and Grill, 2235 S. Power Road, Mesa

  • The raw ground meat was stored on top of the cooked shepherd’s meat on a rack in a refrigerator. The raw chicken was stored in a Ziploc bag in the same container as the raw beef. A manager rearranged the items.
  • A cheese grater stored as clean had cheese residue. The shredder was cleaned and disinfected.
  • Nacho cheese was stored in the much warmer steamer at an internal temperature of 130 F. It was reheated to 165F. The cheese was reheated to maintain a temperature of 135 F or higher.
  • The garlic parmesan sauce, the shepherd and the bone marrow were in a refrigerator stored more than seven days after the discard date. All items were discarded.
  • Powder to kill cockroaches was stored in the establishment. An official threw the gunpowder.

4 violations

KFC, 1525 N. 43rd Ave., Phoenix

  • An employee started his shift and prepared food without washing his hands. Several other employees handled money, dirty dishes and chemicals and then handled food and cleaned dishes without washing their hands.
  • An employee washed and washed the dishes and left them clean without sanitizing them. Another employee dropped utensils on the floor and left them clean without washing or sanitizing them. The problems were corrected during the inspection.
  • Hot nuggets had a temperature ranging from 115 F to 130 F. Nuggets below the hot holding temperature of 135 F were discarded.
  • Standing water was found throughout the facility, due to leaks in the soda machines, the air conditioning compressor and leaking drains. A work order was placed for the repair.

Varsity Tavern, 501 S. Mill Ave., Tempe

  • Cauliflower in container had brown slimy organic material. Cauliflower was discarded.
  • The ranch was stored in a small beverage cooler with an internal temperature of 49 F, four degrees above the proper temperature. The ranch was scrapped.
  • The cooked chicken tinga and the marinara had already passed their discard dates; the cooked ground beef had no date of preparation. All items were discarded.
  • Liquid was leaking from the ceiling into an ice machine on the second floor; the source of the leak was unknown. Use of the machine was suspended until the leak was repaired and re-inspected.

Arre Mexican Street Food, 3805 S. 16th St., Phoenix

  • The leftovers were in a tomato slicer. The die was washed, rinsed and disinfected.
  • Egg breakfast burritos were kept in a Plexiglas warming unit next to a cash register at an internal temperature of 120 F, 15 degrees below the proper holding temperature.
  • Breakfast potatoes, steak with gravy and cold refried beans were at temperatures ranging from 90 F to 52 F. The items were seized.
  • A large leak from an ice machine filtration unit was discharging onto the floor behind the bar top. A plumber arrived on site during the inspection.

Broken Yolk Cafe, 1928 E. Highland Ave., Phoenix

  • There was an accumulation of blue-green organic matter in the bag of grated Parmesan cheese. | The cheese was discarded.
  • Tomato soup, baked beans and sauces in a steam well were measured at a temperature ranging from 115 F to 124 F degrees Fahrenheit. | All foods were reheated to 165F.
  • Several items were observed including mashed potatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, cooked Spanish rice, baked beans, Monterey jack cheese, and ground beef cooked at a temperature ranging from 45 F to 47 F. | Articles were discarded.
  • The cooked Spanish rice was stored in a ready-to-eat bag in the refrigerator. | A manager moved the rice to a food-grade plastic storage container.
