Mets fan started a petition for the statue of the legend at Citi Field, but some strongly against it

There is a petition circulating the Internet asking the Mets to place a statue of former catcher Mike Piazza in front of Citi Field.

It’s gaining a lot of traction, but not all fans are in favor of the idea.

The original idea was posted by Kyle Gelling of the “We Gotta Believe” podcast.

“This is something all baseball fans can agree on,” he wrote to X, along with a link to the petition. “Mike Piazza deserves a statue at Citi Field”.

The idea is to raise the statue by the 25th anniversary of 9/11 in 2026 to commemorate Piazza’s iconic home run that rallied New York City 10 days after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Some Reddit users disagree with the proposal.

“No”, one person wrote. “It was a great HR, but I don’t want to think about 9/11 every time I go to a game. It was traumatic enough when it happened.”

“It’s not appropriate and it’s kind of an insult to the people who died or lost relatives that day,” wrote another. “And I say that as a huge Piazza fan. It was a special moment but he doesn’t deserve a statue. We don’t do 9/11 about the Mets.”

Piazza, a 12-time All-Star, was with the Mets from 1998-2005.
