Gourma/Patrononyms et toponyms: A validation workshop to work on a regional repertoire

Fada N’Gourma (AIB)-The high commissioner of the province of Gourma, Silas Nacanabo, presided, on October 21, 2024 in Fada N’Gourma, the work of the regional workshop of examination and validation of surnames and from toponyms of the Eastern region.

In November 2023, the Prime Minister, in accordance with the declaration of general policy before the Legislative Assembly of Transition (ALT), instructed the Minister in charge of Culture to undertake the initiatives to develop a national directory of toponyms et patronymics nationaux, considered as the essential characteristics of our intangible heritage.

It’s in this same spirit that the living forces of the East region are under the auspices of the regional direction in charge of Eastern Culture, organized on October 21, 2024 in Fada N’ Gourma, an examination and validation workshop for patronymics and toponyms, under the chairmanship of the high commissioner of the province of Gourma, Silas Nacanabo.

According to the regional director of Culture of the East, Talata Marcelline Kaboré, 66 patronymics and 31 toponyms will be examined for validation with the resource persons of the locality who are, among others, the notables and the elderly.

“This workshop aims to clarify these patronymes and toponyms before validation in order to avoid any ambiguity,” said Mme Kaboré.

The Minister of the King of Gulmu, Oyienbiga Oyenboiro, has appreciated this governmental will to elaborate a national directory of toponyms and patronymics.

“This is what we lacked and what justifies the fact that we are today in a world without a soul where we see most people marching without knowing where they go or where they come from,” he argued.

The minister du roi du Gulmu has added a day that should not be spent for a true validation of the collected terms, regarding the interest of the works.

Mme Pobindo Culdiaty, venue of Diapaga, a renchéri arguing that the collection of these patronymics and toponyms allowed them to know many things.

For evidence, she added, she continues with the interest of the explanation of certain patronymics.

The high commissioner of Gourma, Silas Nacanabo, emphasized that the present meeting aimed to require more contributions to enrich the information already collected, before wishing for fruitful exchanges.
