Clare families say they are trying in vain to get out of homelessness

Housing shortages and unaffordability in Clare are said to keep many families in a cycle of emergency accommodation.

Simon Communities of Ireland’s latest Locked Out of the Market report found that just 33 properties across the country were available to rent at the discretionary Housing Benefit Payment Scheme rate in October, which is ten less than in June.

The latest government figures show that 75 people are currently in emergency accommodation in Clare, while a total of 182 children are homeless in the Mid West region.

Midwest Simon regional accommodation manager Jonathan Shinnors says that even when rental properties are available in Clare, they are out of reach for many struggling families.
