Symbolized by the scorpion, the water sign can pack a punch with its personality. As a result, Scorpio has earned a reputation as one of the most polarizing signs in the zodiac.

But according to astrologer Narayana Montúfar, Scorpios are often misunderstood. Here’s a guide to the sign’s key traits, including its approach to relationships and career.

Scorpios are marked by their intensity, Montúfar previously told USA TODAY.

“Scorpian energy is really hard to master,” he reveals, “because Scorpio is ruled by not just one, but two planets.”

These two planets, Mars and Pluto, are among the most intense in the solar system. Mars signifies rulership in ancient astrology, while Pluto represents the life cycle and rebirth.

Scorpios love change and are constantly looking to transform their lives. This is fitting given the sign’s shaman archetype, says Montúfar.

“They have to go through this intense training and this intense introspection, inner transformation and inner discovery,” he explains.

Scorpios are also known for their magnetism, says Montúfar. They have a certain charisma that attracts others.

Scorpios are goal-oriented and motivated, says Montúfar. The sign has a knack for strategy thanks to its high intensity and occasional cruelty.

Scorpions are incredible therapists, adds Montúfar. The sign is not afraid to talk about trauma, welcoming communication to connect with others on a deeper level.

Their ability to understand the thoughts and desires of others also helps Scorpios excel in marketing fields and anything that involves research, says Montúfar.

Compatibility with Scorpio

Scorpios possess great sexual energy, says Montúfar. While this can lead to a healthy sex life, it can also lead to infidelity if a Scorpio’s needs are not met.

However, Scorpios like to be in committed relationships. Being a water sign, they are quite emotional and strive for connection.

But they may be skeptical of others at first. Scorpios often attract trauma and intense life experiences, so they are protective of their inner selves, says Montúfar.

When they open up, Scorpios have a soft inside and will be a travel-or-death companion or friend, Montúfar adds. They are reliable, loyal and intuitive.

Scorpio is more compatible with the other water signs: Cancer and Pisces.

Scorpios are great at reading people and knowing what’s going on in their heads, says Montúfar. “They see right through you,” he adds.

Because of their intuitive nature, Scorpios can be selective about who they spend time with. “They don’t have time for BS”, says Montúfar. “They prefer solitude to wasting time with people who will only be on a surface level.”

They are hardworking, committed and resilient, he adds.

Weaknesses

Scorpios don’t like people, so they don’t engage in small talk.

Their intensity can also be overwhelming if left unchecked. “Whenever a Scorpio wants something, he’ll get it.” says Montúfar. “Sometimes, if they’re on their shadow side, they can be ruthless.”

While change can be good, Scorpio’s constant quest for reinvention can lead to inconsistencies.

A Scorpio’s sexual desire can also lead to their downfall, as a physical need can give way to dependence and obsession.
