The National Environment Agency (NEA) is investigating a company after red water was found in a canal in Kembangan.

A Stomper first alerted Stomp to the incident on the night of October 17th.

He shared photos of bright red water flowing through the canal that he had taken near Jalan Krian at around 9.13pm.

“It just happened, I have no idea why,” he said.

In response to a Stomp query, an NEA spokesperson said a red discharge was observed in the canal on the night of October 13. After being notified, NEA officers conducted an on-site surveillance of the canal the next morning.

“There was heavy rain on the morning of October 14 before our checks, and we found the water in the canal to be normal with no signs of red discharge,” the spokesman said.

“The dissolved oxygen levels and pH of the water were also found to be in the normal ranges.”

However, upon receiving notification that there was red discharge again in the canal on the night of October 17, NEA officers carried out checks the next morning and traced the discharge to a company that car cleaning and cleaning services.

“The company was instructed to immediately stop the open drain discharge and clean public drains affected by its discharge,” the spokesman said.

“NEA takes a serious view of pollution in Singapore’s waterways and is investigating the company for an offense under the Environmental Protection and Management Act.”
