Moline Housing Authority official says 20-unit project addresses shortage

MOLINE, Ill. (KWQC) – More than 1,000 people applied for public housing in the three weeks after the Moline Housing Authority’s waiting list opened.

The Moline Housing Authority is using a $10 million state grant to build 20 units of affordable housing, a community center and garden and a parking lot with more than 40 spaces.

“This is not just another project, it is a project that we strongly believe is necessary to address two things: address the housing shortage and also help citizens to a better quality of life,” said the president and CEO of the Housing Authority, John Afoun.

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria: require supportive services, have a low income, have no criminal record, provide landlord references and pass a credit check.

“We want to make sure that when they come in, we’re not setting them up for failure, that they can meet their basic financial obligations by paying rent and utilities,” Afoun said.

The Moline City Council unanimously approved two ordinances to allow the city to move forward with the project on Oct. 8.

The council will read for the first time Tuesday night an ordinance approving the development and rezoning plan.
