The Lost Crown team disbands after the sequel is rejected

Despite critical success, Ubisoft has disbanded the team behind it Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. A sequel was proposed but rejected so the team can be split up to help develop other projects.

According to sources from French journalist Gautoz at Ubisoft Montpellier, the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team has disbanded and will continue working on other Ubisoft projects. A summary on ResetEra by Arubedo claims that the game’s fate was decided just weeks after launch, and the teams’ time together would come to an end after their DLC was released.

The summary also says that some members proposed a sequel to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, as well as a second expansion, but both were denied because it didn’t meet sales expectations. The team is also reported to have said from the highest levels that releasing a sequel would cannibalize the long-term sales of the initial release.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team was very proud of their work on Metroidvania. A post translated by Gautoz says that three or four developers declared it “the best production of my life”. He also said it was a “rehabilitation zone” for those who burned out on the development of Beyond Good & Evil 2.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was revealed during Summer Game Fest 2023 and released in January 2024. It was received favorably by critics with an 86 on Metacritic. It also released a DLC titled Mask of Darkness that introduced a new area to the game.

The disbanding of The Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team is rather strange considering it’s one of Ubisoft’s most recent critical hits. From the outside looking in, it seemed like it wasn’t marketed as well as it could have been. Not bringing the game to Steam at launch also seemed like a huge misstep for sales. Along with the development of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake reboot, things are not looking bright for the classic franchise.
