Sheriff’s Report: Apple Crash Notification Alerts Deputies to DUI

An Apple Crash alert sent Summit County Sheriff’s Office deputies to Promontory on Saturday.

They observed a vehicle that had crashed near the side of the road at an interchange when they arrived. I was unemployed. While officers were attending to the vehicle, Summit County Dispatch told them the driver had called.

The man said he had been involved in an accident and got lost, according to a probable cause affidavit. Officers and drones circled the area to try to find the man. Dispatch reported the man was 35 years old and was walking down the road wearing a black jacket.

A Utah Highway Patrol trooper assisting with the case located a man matching the suspect’s description about 300 yards from the crash.

After towing the vehicle, an officer drove to where the man was found. His clothes appeared wet and muddy, according to the report. The man explained that his vehicle overturned while coming from Promontory Ranch, where he worked. He admitted to having a few beers and smelled of alcohol. Deputies administered a standardized field sobriety test, but had to stop early due to the man’s level of intoxication.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and refused to provide a breath sample. The man was taken to a hospital and medically cleared before being taken to the Summit County Jail.

Deputies obtained a warrant for a blood test after the man refused to participate. He is being held in the Summit County Jail on bond.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to several other calls between Monday, October 14 and Sunday, October 20, including reports of DUI, vehicle theft and traffic violations.

Saturday, October 19

Walmart reported that a thief was in custody in asset protection. Deputies arrived and located the individual with several items that he did not pay for. The man was also found to be hiding additional merchandise and drug paraphernalia. He was cited for retail theft and possession of paraphernalia.

A vehicle was stopped on SR 224 near Cutter Lane for a traffic violation. Officers noted that the driver was showing signs of impairment and issued a standardized field sobriety test. The driver failed and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. The individual was also charged with driving with high beams.

Friday, October 18

Suspicious activity was reported in the Snyderville Basin. A man said a large bag of marijuana was placed in his car unlocked while he was at the clinic. There are no suspects. The case was transferred to the investigators.

Wednesday, October 16

A vehicle was stopped on Interstate 80 eastbound near mile marker 163 for speeding and lane keeping violations. Officers made contact with the driver and noticed an open container of alcohol. A standardized field sobriety test was administered and the driver performed poorly. The driver was arrested and taken to the Summit County Jail. The suspect was uncooperative and refused any evidence in jail. An order was approved for a blood test. The individual was charged with DUI, open container and speeding.

Tuesday, October 15

A vehicle operating without insurance was stopped on I-80 westbound. Officers noticed the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. A woman in the passenger seat admitted to being in possession of weed. A vehicle search was conducted and a 9 mm handgun and drug paraphernalia were also found. The woman claimed ownership of the firearm. He faces several charges.

Deputies stopped a vehicle in Newpark for an equipment violation. The driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following an investigation. The individual was also charged with having an open container.

Monday, October 14

A vehicle parked in front of a Hoytsville residence had a person slumped inside the car. Deputies made contact with the driver, who agreed to participate in a field sobriety test. He performed poorly and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Drug paraphernalia was also found during the search of the vehicle. The items were confiscated and deposited as evidence. The driver was taken to the Summit County Jail without incident. He was charged with DUI, driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers were dispatched to a vehicle burglary near Run-A-Muk Dog Park. A witness saw a man break the window of an SUV, grab a bag and drive away. A generic description was provided. The vehicle was not found. The victim later received a fraud alert notice from their bank revealing a possible suspicious name. The case was transferred to investigations for follow-up.
