Steve Sarkisian sends message to Texas Longhorns fans after bottle-throwing incident

Steve Sarkisian sends message to Texas Longhorns fans after bottle-throwing incident

The matchup between the Texas Longhorns and Georgia Bulldogs was anything but boring.

It was a drama-filled night on the field, with quarterback changes, controversial penalties (and penalty reversals) and constant momentum swings. Even the fans got in on the action.

But not in a good way.

In the second half after a controversial pass interference call on a Jahdae Barron interception – a call that was later reversed – fans became enraged and began throwing trash onto the field. The fans’ actions ended up causing a stoppage in the game, with head coach Steve Sarkisian approaching the student section to try to stop the incident.

Sarkisian was visibly upset with the situation at the time and sent a message to fans during his weekly press conference on Monday, saying it was not how he wanted Longhorns fans or the atmosphere in his stadium to be perceived.

“I know we have a passionate fan base, and I think that showed on Saturday night,” Sarkisian said. “I think we were all a little upset at the time. I just think we all have to use a little more discretion in times like this. We don’t want that to be the narrative; that this is all DKR is. It was a football game too good to be the focus of all this, I think they got it right in the end (the interference call).

As a result of the incident, the SEC fined the Longhorns $250,000. It also prompted University of Texas President Jay Hartzell and even Longhorns super fan Matthew McConaughey to send separate statements to the fan base.

Longhorns fans will have plenty of time to digest Sarkisian’s statement, as well as those from President Hartzell and McConaughey in the coming weeks, as they don’t return to DKR until a Nov. 9 matchup against the Florida Gators.

Before that, they will travel to Nashville to face Vanderbilt, followed by their second bye week of the season.

Kickoff for the next home game against Florida is set for 11 a.m.
