Emma Raducanu’s miserable 2024 season almost ended with the latest retirement

Emma Raducanu has become the latest player to pull out of this month’s Hong Kong Open and it effectively ends the season for the Briton who has had a tough time, especially in recent months.

Raducanu has recovered from the foot injury that forced her to withdraw before her Korea Open quarter-final against Daria Kasatkina a month ago. He has already missed four tournaments he originally signed up for.

He said he was all set to have a great Asian swing, especially being of Chinese heritage. But it soon visibly blew up in his face when he got injured and he has battled back ever since. Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin has taken her place. The American has also struggled to get back to her best after becoming a Grand Slam champion.

Raducanu had confirmed he was playing in Hong Kong last week in a video released by the tournament. “Hello everyone, this is Emma Raducanu. I really can’t wait to come and play in the Prudential Women’s Hong Kong Open,” she said.

“It’s my first time playing a WTA event there, but I was there in December last year and I loved the city.

“So I’m really looking forward to coming and I hope to see you all there in October.”

The only tournament Raducanu has signed up for to end the year is the Billie Jean King Cup Final, which will likely be her focus now instead of heading to Hong Kong for a single week. Instead, it’s a shorter trip to Malaga from London in a few weeks, hopefully for a title tilt. But it’s a shame to see Raducanu have such a slow start to the season. Although it is by design, it has added fuel to the fire for the doubters it will hope to silence in 2025.
