Masahiro Sakurai’s next game began development in 2022

Sakurai began working on the game as soon as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate ended DLC development.

Masahiro Sakurai, beloved game developer and architect of the Super Smash Bros. series, released the latest installment of his YouTube series today. Over the past couple of years, the Masahiro Sakurai Channel at Making Games saw routine uploads where Sakurai shared tips and wisdom about game development. At the end of his series, Sakurai confirms that his next game is currently in development.

The final episode of Sakurai’s YouTube series reveals that he wrote a pitch for a new game after Sora, the latest Super Smash Bros. DLC fighter. Ultimate, was released in 2021. The release was approved and development was scheduled to begin in April 2022. .

Sakurai had several months of free time between the approval of his release and the start of development. So while assembling a team, he recorded footage for his YouTube channel.

This confirmation will no doubt lead to speculation about Sakurai’s next game. With a new Nintendo console on the horizon, some theorize that a new Smash Bros. could be on its way. There are also fans who wonder if Sakurai could return to the Kirby or Kid Icarus franchises.
