Matt Cardle has revealed that “a story was made” about his background during his time on The X Factor.

The 41-year-old performer rose to fame after winning the seventh season of the ITV reality talent show in 2010, and signed a £1m recording deal with Syco Music.

Her debut single When We Collide debuted at number one in the UK Singles Chart and became the second best-selling single of 2010.

When he auditioned for the show, Matt talked about working as a painter/decorator, but that wasn’t the case at all.

At the time, Matt, who plays guitar, drums and piano, was already a concert musician before signing up.

“That’s just the story they like to spin, isn’t it? They wouldn’t say I was a musician and singer/songwriter. They had to say what else did you do? And I said, ‘Well, I’m painting my dad’s shed,'” he remember

“And they said, ‘Oh, a painter/decorator.’ I wasn’t. And it wasn’t my last chance. It was because they liked the danger and they liked to put you on the edge of your seat, which is what it was about,” he added when speaking to the Echo.

But reflecting on the life-changing experience of the series, Matt said he “looked back on it all fondly”.

“Even if I didn’t, it gave me such an incredible break,” he added.

Over the years, Matt has also been open about his battle with alcohol and drug addiction problems after checking into rehab in 2013.

Explaining how “dark” things were before she made the decision, she said she “went to get the help I needed”.

‘It’s been up and down. Life is, according to their definitions, full of ups and downs. You can’t plan for the next event that might push you to a place where you feel like you need help, but for now I’m fine,” she shared.

Matt also added that he was willing to be honest about his struggles to help others, saying that “if someone sees something or reads something that I’ve said that helps them in some way to shape up, it’s worth doing -ho”.

Matt won the hit talent show the same year One Direction came third.

In his audition, he told host Dermot O’Leary the following when asked what he did for a living: “I’ve been working as a painter for a couple of years, it’s boring and monotonous and , to be honest, I still hate myself.

“This opportunity would mean the end of magnolia on my face and hands, the end of brushes, the end of hotel rooms and the rest I need.”

Earlier this year, he also revealed that he had “made a conscious decision to hit his head” and had gotten sober.

He is also scheduled to release his first album since 2018 next year.
