Arnold Palmer’s daughter reacts to Donald Trump’s NSFW comments

“There is nothing to say. I’m not really upset,” the 68-year-old said The Associated Press in an interview published on October 20. “I think it was a poor choice of approaches to remember my father, but what are you going to do?”

Wears added that his father and Trump had shared “an interest in golf and a love of golf,” but that he had only had passing encounters with Trump over the years.

Trump spoke about Palmer during one of his rallies on Oct. 19 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the city where Palmer was born and started the sport he became famous for.

“He was an incredible man,” Trump said of Palmer, “he was an incredible champion and he came from Latrobe.”

The current Republican presidential candidate went on a 12-minute rant about Palmer, even having a NSFW discussion about the impression the athlete gave in the shower.

“When he showered with other professionals, they left there. They said, ‘Oh my God. That’s incredible,” Trump said with a laugh. “I had to say that. We have very sophisticated women here, but they used to see Arnold as a man.”

According to his daughter, Palmer, who died in 2016 at age 87, “believed in the Republican Party.”

“Not a day goes by that I don’t think about what my dad would say about something or what’s going on,” Wears told the AP. “We didn’t always agree on things, but he was a quintessential American who believed fervently in this country, even when he questioned its leadership.”

Wears previously discussed Palmer’s opinion of President Trump during a 2018 interview with author Thomas Hauser, saying, “My father didn’t like people acting like they were better than other people. He had no patience with people who are dishonest and cheat. My father wanted to be a good role model. He was appalled by Trump’s lack of civility and what he saw as Trump’s lack of character.”
