Black women (and men) are fueling the 2024 election

Black women of all ages and geographic regions in America play a key role in protecting voting rights and urging their communities to vote.

Tactics have changed. Voting barriers have changed. Even the dangerous environments in which many do their work have changed. But their mission, say black women who work to register people to vote, is the same across generations.

Do more at work for the same pay?

If the answer is “yes”, you are not alone. As the economy cools after a post-pandemic burst of activity, many companies facing high costs and flat or falling sales are pulling back on hiring and instead training existing employees to cope with new tasks when co-workers put them aside or let them go. In many cases, this means that staff are doing two or more extra jobs. On the one hand, this means expanding skill sets and bolstering their resumes. On the other hand, many employees told USA TODAY that they are not necessarily getting a raise despite their expanded responsibilities. Read more

A Deadly Collapse of the Georgia Pier

US investigates intelligence leak about Israel’s plans to attack Iran

The “very troubling” leak of secret US intelligence documents detailing Israel’s plans for a retaliatory strike against Iran is under investigation, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday . The documents, revealed on the Telegram messaging app last week, appear to have been prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. They describe US interpretations of Israeli Air Force and Navy planning using satellite imagery from October 15-16. The Pentagon said it is investigating the leak.

New York Liberty wins first WNBA championship

After facing the bottom of five WNBA Finals, the New York Liberty captured their first championship, beating the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in overtime in the decisive Game 5 on Sunday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn , New York. It’s been a long road for the Liberty, one of the original teams when the WNBA debuted in 1997. Jonquel Jones led New York with 17 points and six rebounds, and was named WNBA Finals MVP. The Los Angeles Dodgers had a champagne-soaked celebration after winning the National League pennant by defeating the New York Mets, 10-5, at Dodger Stadium to win the NLCS, 4 games to 2. For the fourth time in eight years, the Dodgers go to the World Series, where they will face the New York Yankees. This will be the first time in over 40 years that New York and LA will meet in the series.
