Duchess Sophie’s professional conduct in Chad has led royal experts to draw comparisons with other members of the royal family.

The aim of Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh’s visit to Chad was to draw attention to the worsening humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Sudan.

More than 10 million people have been forced to flee their homes by the conflict in Sudan, the Palace says, with a large proportion of women and children now arriving as refugees in Chad.

Speaking to the Daily Mail’s Palace Confidential, Richard Eden said: “Sophie reminds me a little bit of Princess Anne, actually, in the way she goes on trips abroad for herself. They often have very serious themes. . With Princess Anne, she was often with Save the Children, and in Sophie’s case, it’s usually serious stuff and she’s usually alone.”

He added: “Sophie was an established businesswoman in her own right before she met Prince Edward. She is used to representing herself.”

The Mail on Sunday’s editor-in-chief Charlotte Griffiths explained more on the podcast: “I think she’s done this role really fearlessly. She’s not afraid to listen to incredibly difficult stories.”

Meanwhile, the Mail on Sunday’s Natasha Livingstone added: “It’s a sign of the direction she’s going. The Palace and the government trust her to take on these increasingly serious and important issues.”

While in the central African country, the Duchess of Edinburgh met with refugees on the border of war-torn Sudan and broke down after hearing the horrific stories of sexual violence the women had faced.

With tears in her eyes, Duchess Sophie spoke about her experience in Chad. She told the Sun: “I can’t even begin to describe what they’ve been doing to the children. It’s not just the sexual violence, which is horrible because they have to trade food and water for sex, and if they don’t they kill

“These women have no choice but to leave. And yet they are lucky. If they can escape, because some of the towns and villages they come from, they can no longer leave their homes. If they leave. their homes kill them” .

Princess Anne has often been dubbed the “hardest working” member of the Royal Family and in 2023, the Princess Royal attended the most royal engagements of any member of the firm.

According to the Telegraph’s count using the court circular, the royal family’s official record of previous engagements, the 73-year-old princess royal has carried out 457 engagements.

Former press spokesman Dickie Arbiter told the newspaper: “He just gets on with it, often doing several engagements in one day.”

According to The Telegraph, Princess Anne mustered 12-14 engagements in a typical week in 2023.
