Howard University and DC businesses are hoping for an economic boost ahead of the 100th homecoming

Howard University celebrates its 100th homecoming on campus and in the district.

As thousands of alumni prepare to attend the celebration, the University and local businesses are expecting a huge increase in revenue.

“Homecoming has always been, for 100 years, an economic boost for the city. We believe it will bring millions in hospitality, food revenue and sales,” Princess Gamble, Associate Vice President and Director of Development Operations and Relations with Howard alumni. The university told 7News.

“Our alumni are showing up at record rates. Howard’s homecoming draws from the community, so we’re expecting thousands of people this year,” Gamble added.

From local food trucks on the patio to connecting across town for brunch and daily parties, business owners said they look forward to the event every year.

Marc Barnes, the owner of Park at 14th, a lively nightclub and restaurant, hosts several events throughout the weekend. Barnes said he expects thousands to show up because it’s Howard’s 100th homecoming.

“I know the city looks forward to it every year,” Barnes told 7News. Park at 14th has been hosting Howard’s homecoming events for over 15 years at the DMV.

“Parking on 14th is arguably a staple here in Washington DC,” Barnes added.

On the other side of Howard’s centennial commemoration is Howard alumna Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris has set his sights on the Oval Office less than 20 days before a historic election.

“A lot of people are really coming back to support the fact that Kamala (Harris) graduated from Howard,” Barnes said. “To be recognized as a place where a presidential candidate has come from shows that anyone can do anything.”
