Dana Carvey had to learn Jennifer Coolidge’s impression at the last minute

Dana Carvey is revealing how she ended up playing a 100-year-old version of Jennifer Coolidge for a Saturday night live sketch last week.

The comedian, who has been playing Joe Biden since the NBC comedy’s 50th season began last month, recently told superfly, his and David Spade’s derivative series fly on the wall podcast, which has to know at the last minute his impression of the beloved actress.

“They pitched it to me Thursday night,” Carvey, who was originally a cast member. SNL from 1986 to 1993, he said. “They explained to me that the character was like something out of Snow White, that my Jennifer Coolidge had been trapped in the mirror for 100 years.”

The sketch titled “Maybelline” saw Chloe Fineman’s Jennifer Coolidge get help putting on “Maybelline Super Stay Long Wear Liquid Lip Color” based on Jennifer Coolidge’s reflection in the mirror, played by host Ariana Grande. And then a third Coolidge (Carvey) revealed himself in another mirror after Fineman asked, “Hey, I wonder what our lips look like from the side?”

“Thank God you opened the mirror,” Carvey said. “I’ve been stuck here for years!”

In the podcast, the comedian described the sketch as “kind of an esoteric, acid sketch.” He added: “I still don’t quite get it, but it was fun.”

He also shared that due to the timing, “they had to take about four beats” between the dress rehearsal and the live performance. “One was we were eating corn. It was a lot wilder, it was amazing. It was a non sequitur like, ‘Hey. Wow! Let’s eat some corn,'” Carvey said in his Coolidge voice. “Suddenly they have corn. ‘Can I have your corn?’

Carvey also played a video (below) for Spade that his former SNL Co-star Jon Lovitz filmed behind the scenes of him rehearsing his lines for the Jennifer Coolidge sketch.
