3 things I really liked about the documentary series Mr. McMahon on Netflix as a lifelong wrestling fan and 2 things that could have been better

I love pro wrestling and even as a youngster I connected Mr. Vincent Kennedy McMahon to the squared circle.

And, how could I not? In the Attitude Era with Rock and “Stone Cold” Steve AustinVince McMahon became a character, and was probably one of the greatest heels of all time. Not only that, but his family was woven into the story, so the McMahon empire is pretty much synonymous with “pro wrestling” to me.

So I was really excited about the Netflix docuseries, Mr. McMahon (Though McMahon himself wasn’t too happy about it)as I really wanted to learn more about the man, the myth, the tycoon. And, after finishing the 6-episode series, I have to say it was really good! However… there are a couple of things that could have been a little better. let’s talk

Love: They made sure to talk about the whole McMahon family and they all gave their Vince impression

One thing I loved about the Attitude Era (among many things) was that it blurred the lines between fact and fiction. Of course, some stories, like the one involving Linda McMahon being in some sort of comatose state in a wheelchair were ridiculous, as were Vince McMahon’s limo explodes.

However, stories of Stephanie McMahon marrying Triple H or Shane McMahon not being “good enough” to inherit the family business seemed to be somewhat rooted in reality. I mean, Stephanie McMahon married Triple H (although, not by the ridiculous means portrayed on TV), you never knew what you were going to get when it came to the McMahon family.

And I’m glad this docuseries made sure to have all the main family members, which are Vince, Linda, Stephanie and Shane, talking about both Vince McMahon and the business itself.

We hear from each family member and learn that Linda didn’t like being on TV, but she did it to advance the stories. We find out that Steph put the kibosh on their marriage on TV and that Vince called her “selfish” for doing it. We even hear Shane say that everything he did was mainly to earn his father’s respect, including putting his body on the line.

Unfortunately, we also hear from other people in the industry, like Paul Heyman, which has a heartbreaking story involving Shane this really makes me look at McMahon’s offspring in a whole new way.

All of this is to say that the docuseries feels pretty deep when it comes to the McMahon family. Having said that…

It could have been better: I wish we had heard from Gail Kim and CM Punk

There are a number of wrestlers who were interviewed for this docuseries, including The Rock, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Booker T, Trish Stratus, John Cena, and Hulk Hogan, just to name a few. (but surprisingly none with arguably the greatest wrestler of all time, Kurt Angle, which is disappointing).

That said, aside from Bret Hart, who once had a rocky relationship with McMahon, I’d say the other wrestlers involved in this docuseries are the ones who had mostly positive relationships with him (hell, The Undertaker even said how would have taken a bullet). for McMahon).

And sure This is great. I love hearing how many wrestlers saw Vince as “a father figure”.

Still, it would have been nice to hear wrestlers with, shall we say, less flattering things to say about McMahon.

One person I would have liked to see was Gail Kim, who said that McMahon I just didn’t get it when it came to diversity. It would also have been interesting to hear his thoughts as a counterpoint to the idea that some of the wrestlers put forward in this docuseries that the only color Vince sees is green, as in money, and that he doesn’t see race.

However, I think an even more interesting interviewee could have been CM Punk, who did an explosive “pipe bomb” promotion. (which was apparently a worked shoot) to McMahon. I would also have liked to hear what he had to say about being fired on his wedding day.

Sure, CM Punk made a surprising return to WWE not long ago, but that’s how it was after Paul Levesque took over the creative. Hearing Punk speak candidly about McMahon before he was rehired might have been eye-opening.

Unfortunately, it looks like they played it as safe as possible with these interviews. But be that as it may…

Love: They didn’t shy away from really sensitive topics, like the deaths of Chris Benoit and Owen Hart

Okay, maybe Vince didn’t get a lot of flak in this docuseries from his employees, but that doesn’t mean the doc didn’t cover some pretty thorny topics.

For example, honestly he didn’t I think they were going to “the Montreal Screwjob”, or how Bret Hart felt when it happened.

I also didn’t think they would touch Owen Hart’s death with a thirteen foot pole, or even have the audacity to ask how McMahon felt about it. It seemed out of bounds, but they went for it, and I’m glad they did.

But the biggest bigger The surprise was that they actually covered The murder-suicide of Chris Benoitwhich I thought was totally off limits. You see, Benoit’s name was pretty much not allowed on WWE television after the events, and it was always taboo when anyone brought up what a good wrestler he was.

So I was very surprised when they spent an entire section of the docuseries talking about what Benoit did and how he might have been connected to CTE. I really didn’t think they would take it, but they did.

It could have been better – it feels so incomplete

In the first episode, he lets viewers know that Vince McMahon’s interviews didn’t end because of the breaking news of his accusationsand this is a big blow to global production.

I say this because the last episode, “The Finish,” ironically feels largely unfinished as we don’t hear Vince’s thoughts on the scandal he got so involved in.

Now, that makes perfect sense as I’m sure McMahon was lawyered up and possibly advised not to talk about anything involving the legal issues he was going through.

It’s still a bummer, especially since McMahon himself probably would have been very open about the scandal at the time it was happening. So the final product doesn’t feel as complete, which is a problem, since the rest of the docuseries are mostly fascinating (and revelatory) stuff.

Dear: McMahon was willing to be very open, which was surprising

have you ever seen the movie, Saving Mr. banks, in which Tom Hanks played Walt Disney?

I’m only pulling this movie because instead of going deep on Disney, warts and all, we get a very sanitized version of the man whose only real vice (from what we saw in the movie) was that he smoked . . Really shocking stuff.

However, McMahon’s docuseries is wide open. McMahon talks about how he thinks a lot about sex and that he did have affairs. He talks about his failure with the XFL and how he saw himself as a character when he was on TV, which allowed him to basically drink with other women in front of his wife with reckless abandon.

He also reflects on the steroid scandal and how he felt people were out to get him. His rival, Eric Bischoff, hints that McMahon might have borrowed the evil owner angle from him, and McMahon just brushes it off, implying that maybe that’s the case, but he did it better.

In every way, Vince McMahon is pretty open, and that’s what I loved about this docuseries. It was definitely a must-see.

So in the end, while the docuseries wasn’t perfect, it was pretty engaging. to have you have you seen it yet? For more news on all things WWE, be sure to stop by often!
