BrucePac listeria recall meat and poultry sent to these 200 schools, USDA reveals

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released a preliminary list of schools that received products included in the 11.8 million-pound BrucePac listeria recall.

Initially reported without a product list on Oct. 9 as a recall of 9,986,245 pounds of meat and poultry due to possible listeria contamination, the figure rose Wednesday to include an additional 1,779,040 pounds, increasing the weight up to a total of £11.8 million. An additional £1.7m was sent to schools, although a list was not provided at the time of the announcement.

On Thursday evening, the USDA’s Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) updated the advisory with a preliminary list of approximately 200 schools to which recalled products were distributed. According to the notice, the products that went to those schools were not part of USDA’s national school lunch and breakfast programs.

The agency is also steadily expanding a list of products and product labels affected by the recall, which ran to 348 pages as of Friday.

This is the most recent list of US schools that received recalled food, according to data from FSIS.

What types of products are recalled?

Sandwiches, wraps and salads are the main prepared foods affected by the recall. Also affected are frozen meals containing chicken products ranging from pastas and burritos to bowls and family meals.

The ready-to-eat meat and poultry items were produced from May 31, 2024 to October 8, 2024. The products were shipped to other establishments and distributors around the country and then distributed in restaurants, schools and institutions.

USDA continues to update the list of affected products and suggests that you check fsis.usda.gov/recalls frequently.

What is listeriosis or listeria poisoning?

Listeriosis, or listeria poisoning, is a foodborne bacterial infection most commonly caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It is considered a serious illness and can be dangerous or life-threatening, especially for the elderly, people with weak immune systems and pregnant women.

Signs and symptoms of listeriosis can take weeks to appear after consumption. According to the USDA, people in the highest risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within two months of eating contaminated food should seek medical attention and tell their health care provider that they ate contaminated food.
