A software engineer working at Google has taken the internet by storm after sharing an unusual rejection response to a job application. Delhi-based Google employee Annu Sharma took to X (formerly Twitter) to share a screenshot of her rejection letter from a startup, revealing that it was deemed “too good” for the position you applied for. In her post, she expressed her disbelief, stating: “I didn’t know you could be rejected for being too good.”

In the rejection letter, the recruiter explained the reasoning behind the decision. “After reviewing your resume, we realized that your qualifications significantly exceed the requirements of the role. Our experience is that candidates with higher qualifications often find the job unsatisfying and tend to leave shortly after joining,” was read

Ms. Sharma shared the post a day ago. Since then it has accumulated more than 55,000 views. His unusual story of rejection resonated with many others.

Reacting to the post, one user wrote: “I was rejected too recently, not because I was more qualified, but because I was from a higher ranked university. I told them I wasn’t leaving, but they were so inclined.”

“They’ve told me in interviews three times that I’m overqualified and they think I’ll be leaving their company in a few months,” shared another.

“I personally know of a case of someone who got to a master’s degree after working for 10 years. He applied for an entry-level position through campus recruiting (standard process) He was rejected for the reason stated above, but asked him to apply for a Mr. Developer position (and got the job),” commented a third user.

Some social media users also expressed appreciation for the recruiter’s honesty. “I mean, you have to appreciate their openness about it. They could have easily made up some excuse or fixed you. Instead, they recognized your superiority for the role. You won’t find many companies that do it. . And if they were right and you didn’t like the opportunity it would have been a loss for both parties,” said one user.

“Wow! It’s actually nice that they send us a thank you email instead of the generic one about moving on,” added another.
