ABC meteorologist Sam Champion reveals skin cancer diagnosis

Sam Champion revealed his skin cancer diagnosis and a large facial scar on air Friday.

The weatherman told “Good Morning America” ​​viewers that he had a birthmark removed from his right cheek, which turned out to be nodular basal cell carcinoma.

The removal took place earlier this month at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, with the cancer “larger and deeper” than expected.

Champion, 63, noted that she also underwent laser treatment to remove dark and precancerous spots on other parts of her face.

The ABC personality urged viewers to be “vigilant” as they share their health scare.

“I hope that one day no one will have to go through surgery to get rid of skin cancer, but right now we have to watch our skin, our hands on our skin… and notice any unusual spots,” she explained. . . “And if those points start to change, take care immediately.”

Champion added that she no longer “thinks about going out without sunscreen.”

He clarified that this careful mindset had not always been “the case”, recalling having had “severe sunburns” in the past.

Now, however, Champion doesn’t “leave the house without wearing sunscreen.”

He continued: “It doesn’t matter how old you are, my first one was 26, it doesn’t matter what your skin tone is, your skin type, your skin color, they’re killing everyone’s skin cancer. So it’s everyone’s problem.”

Champion shared footage from their dates, including a clip of him expressing “disappointment (disappointment)” at the “big, gaping hole” in his face.

“I’m not going to enjoy having a bigger scar than I thought I was going to have, but that’s how it’s going today,” he said.
