The best fact checker finally reveals which party lies more: Democrats or Republicans

The creator of a political fact-checking website has finally revealed which party lies more: Democrats or republicans.

Bill Adair, who started the Pulitzer Prize-winning website PolitiFact, admitted that despite his claims over the years, he was in fact vigilant and found the GOP to be the most liberal with the truth.

In 2012, a C-SPAN caller asked Adair which part he lies the most Washington Journal and claimed he “didn’t keep score.”

The former Washington bureau chief Tampa Bay Times He has since left the non-profit fact-checking company, so he said he can now “speak freely” about who is more deceptive.

Appearing in Washington Journal 12 years later, as part of a media blitz to promote his new book Beyond the big lie, fact-checker admitted he “was lying” in 2012 to show his company was “truly non-partisan.”

According to PolitiFact’s count, the Republican party actually lied “far more” than the Democrats, and since then, Adair has found, the disparity between the parties has only grown.

Between 2016 and 2021, Republicans lied 55 percent of the time, compared to Democrats 31 percent of the time, according to Adair’s firm’s research on politicians’ statements.

“I think we need to talk about it because the fact that there are so many lies from Republicans, it’s really affecting our discourse,” he said Thursday.

The reporter, who is now a professor at Duke University, said it was clear the Republican party was “taking more liberties” even before he founded PolitiFact in 2007.

“This has been evident since before we started PolitiFact,” he told PBS Amanpour and Company on wednesday

“When I was covering Congress, I remember thinking, ‘You know, there’s a lot more going on at the moment … stretching the truth and lying coming from the Republicans.’

“I would just find that the Republicans took more liberties.”

Asked what might have caused the widening disparity between the parties, Adair insisted: “This is not a book about Donald Trump.”

However, Trump has twice earned PolitiFact’s Liar of the Year title.

Its current position on the fact-checking website is that 76 percent of its claims are “mostly false,” “false,” or “pants on fire,” the highest degree of falsehood that PolitiFacts considers a “ridiculous claim “.

Meanwhile, 47 percent of Vice President Kamala Harris’ claims are said to be mostly false or false, none of which have earned pants-on-fire recognition, according to the website.

To make sure Trump didn’t single-handedly tip the balance for Republicans, Adair tried to remove the former president from the tally to see if he would still be the worst-offending party.

“To be doubly sure, we took out the biggest liar, Donald Trump, and there were still a lot more lies from the Republicans than from the Democrats,” he told PBS.

“So I don’t think there’s any question … that pattern is true and it’s especially true now.”

While the data shows that GOP politicians lie more, the question remains, why?

For Adair, lying is systemic within the Republican party.

“Republicans see their work as part of this epic battle, and in that, it’s such an important cause to them that they really believe lying is justified in this epic battle,” he added.
