‘My salary is less than my rent’ – Andy Carroll reveals he snubbed Saudi Arabia to join Bordeaux

Andy Carroll (35) has revealed the extent of the financial sacrifice he is making to play for Second Division side Girondins de Bordeaux in an interview with The Team.

Carroll’s decision to leave Ligue 2 side SC Amiens to join Bordeaux certainly raised some eyebrows. The former England international joined Amiens from Reading the previous summer. However, despite featuring prominently in Ligue 2 last season, he decided to drop down to the fourth tier to join recently bankrupt Bordeaux, was forced to revoke his professional status and , as a result, was kicked out of Ligue 2. , despite securing safety last season.

He has hit the ground running at Bordeaux, scoring a brace in each of his first two games for his new club, helping them to their first league win since relegation. In an interview with RMC Sport, Carroll revealed that it cost him money to play at Bordeaux, without going into details.

The media evoked a salary of €3,500. “No, it’s much less than that,” Carroll said The Team. “I won’t tell you the exact figure but to give you an idea, since I moved here, I rent a very nice house and my salary is lower than my rent. If I joined Bordeaux, it was obviously not for the money. I had offers from other places to play in Saudi Arabia, but that didn’t interest me.” added the former England international. A Bordeaux insider said The Team that Carroll’s salary is less than €2,500 per month.
