Rebecca Ferguson has said she tried to contact Liam Payne a week before his death because she had been “worried about him for a while”.

The singer appeared in the final of The X Factor alongside One Direction in 2010.

He said he tried to contact Payne last Saturday as he saw he was struggling.

“I messaged some of the fans and said, ‘I’m really worried about Liam, how do I get in touch with him?’ and nobody knew how,” the 38-year-old said in a live X Space with One Direction fans.

“But I’ve been worried about him for a while because I could see he wasn’t in a good place, and I thought he might have been triggered by a lot of things that have been in the news here lately.”

Ferguson said he joined the live chat because he “wanted to feel like he was a part of something” after Payne’s death.

She said she feels “heartbroken for that boy I met” on The X Factor.

The contestants were “like family” when they lived together and toured together, she said.
