The incident took place in Mumbai’s Powai area.

A Mumbai woman recently shared a disturbing incident in which a man claiming to be a police officer got into her bus and tried to fine her for using a vaporizer. In a series of posts on X (formerly X), the woman’s brother detailed the incident that took place in Mumbai’s Powai area. The woman claimed that a man dressed in plain clothes tried to detain her and threatened legal action if she did not pay him Rs 50,000. He also said the man refused to provide identification or other formal identification, after which he sensed foul play and began recording the entire exchange inside the automobile.

“I am currently at MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) Road and this man followed me and got into my auto-rickshaw. He is trying to forcefully take me to Powai Chowki,” the woman said in the clip, which it showed her sitting on the back of the three-wheeler with a man dressed in a white shirt and trousers sitting beside her. As she pointed the camera at the man, he covered his face with his hand and tried to break her phone. “You can’t take me anywhere without a police presence,” the woman said.

In the following post, user X shared a detailed account of the incident. They explained: “My sister was coming back from college, holding her vape, when this guy gets into the car she’s in. They’re in front of the MIDC and she’s alone.”

“He says he’s a policeman and demands 50,000 rupees for the crime of having a vape. He sits next to her, starts vaping from his vape and tries to intimidate her with threats. He says if he doesn’t have money, he will. be taken to Powai police station and drive the car there,” the user wrote.

“She was understandably shaken and called me in a panic. I told her it was just a scare tactic to extort money. I then told her to take out her phone and start recording the interaction. As soon as she did, his behavior completely changed,” they said in the following post.

The user said that when his sister started recording the incident, the man got scared and quickly got out of the car. “Before leaving, my sister had told him her name while panicking, she said something like ‘ye shaani ko baadme dekh lunga’ that given what our country is going through. All the while she refused to identify or show yourself,” the User X wrote.

Since it was shared, the incident has gone viral on social media, sparking widespread reactions. While some users praised the woman for her quick thinking, others asked the Mumbai police to take action against the impostor.

“Mumbai police pls take action against this cop its a matter of image of our police and safety of women in mumbai,” commented one user. “There are no legal restrictions that specifically prevent people from using e-cigarettes. The legislation prohibits the sale, manufacture, distribution, export, transportation, etc.,” wrote another.

“Brave and smart girl. Instead of verbally arguing with him, she put her mind to it and realized that something was wrong with this person,” expressed a third user.
