I was seen as the next Drogba in England, but I’m not, Lukaku

Striker Romelu Lukaku has spoken about the comparisons that have followed him throughout his career, particularly during his time in English football.

Often compared to Chelsea legend Didier Drogba due to his physical stature and style, Lukaku has revealed the comparisons were misplaced.

“In England, they wanted to put me in a box. They see someone built like me and think: new Drogba,” Lukaku said during an interview with Friends of Sports published Wednesday via YouTube.

The Belgian forward, who has played for top Premier League clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United and Everton, noted that while his physical presence is a defining characteristic, his style of play differs significantly from Drogba’s .

“I’m not like that. Didier returned more to goal; could hold the ball from where you play it. This was not my style”, he explained.

Lukaku further underlined the challenges he faced by constantly comparing himself to Drogba, whose style and skills he said were a template for how people expected him to play.
