Adam Peaty has revealed he will compete “100 per cent” at Los Angeles 2028 if the 50m freestyle is added to the Olympic swimming programme.

Peaty was narrowly beaten in the 100m at Paris 2024 while chasing a third individual Olympic gold and intends to take a break from competitive swimming to focus on his family.

The 29-year-old has indicated he may consider a return for the upcoming California Games, and would only be encouraged if a gold medal was on offer in a sprint event in which he has excelled.

Peaty is the world record holder over 50 meters and a three-time world champion in the event. Only freestylers have previously raced a length of the pool at the Olympics, but reports after Paris suggested World Aquatics would push LA organizers to add the 50m breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly to the itinerary.

If they succeed, Peaty is sure to attend.

“World Aquatics can submit to the Olympic committee that the 50m breaststroke should be at the Games,” Peaty said. BBC Breakfast.

“If that happens, it would be 100% yes, I’m there – I’m not sure when I’ll know.

“I will stay fit and train for two years, but I will take a break, I will prioritize other things. I really enjoy public speaking now and motivating people.”

Peaty’s silver in Paris was his sixth Olympic medal overall. The British swimmer tested positive for Covid-19 in the morning after being touched by Nicolo Martinenghi.
