The federal standing committee on public safety and national security has unanimously called an emergency meeting on the investigation into the Indian government’s alleged covert operations in Canada, says MP Allistair MacGregor.

Standing committee members wrote in a letter dated Tuesday that the RCMP’s revelations are “very alarming.” They are calling for a discussion on “what steps the government could take to protect Canadians and our country.”

On Monday, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme alleged links between Indian government agents and “widespread violence” in Canada, including homicides and “more than a dozen” imminent threats against members of the Indian community Canadian, specifically Sikh members.

The committee’s request comes after NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told reporters Tuesday that he wanted a parliamentary commission to investigate how to protect Canadians against threats from India.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the government had expelled six Indian diplomats because New Delhi had refused to cooperate with criminal investigations.
