Newcastle legend Alan Shearer says he has been told “reliably” that Eddie Howe has not been approached by the FA about becoming England boss.

Widespread reports on Tuesday evening indicated that former Chelsea and Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel had agreed a deal to manage the Three Lions.

Interim manager Lee Carsley has made it three wins and one loss since his appointment in August and will remain in charge of England’s Nations League doubleheader against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.

The FA began its search for England’s next manager in July, when Gareth Southgate tendered his resignation following the team’s Euro 2024 runner-up finish.

Pep Guardiola, considered by many to be the best coach in world football, has been probed by the FA. However, the Spaniard is expected to extend his stay at Manchester City for another 12 months.

England managers Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and Howe have also been linked throughout the summer, but Shearer has it on good authority that the Newcastle boss was not even contacted.

‘It’s happened so fast. We said the other day that maybe there was a reason Lee Carsley was ruled out because that’s probably what he did,” the former Newcastle and England striker told The Rest Is Football podcast.

‘Maybe you (Gary Lineker) were right to say he knew something we all didn’t.

“I really hope they have spoken to English managers.

“I’m told they didn’t speak to Eddie Howe or they didn’t ring him, they tell me reliably, which is a big surprise to me considering he would be the leading English candidate.”

Shearer has no problem with a German becoming coach of the national team in Tuchel, as long as he was the “outstanding” candidate for the job.

Asked if he was happy for a German to take over, Shearer replied: “If he’s an outstanding candidate then, yes! If he’s the only one.

“But it would be a bit of a concern to know what the way is for English coaches? If they have brought this center we thought and they want to promote English coaches, then the leading candidate (would be Howe).

“I’m happy in a way because Newcastle won’t lose their manager and he’s an excellent manager.

“He would have been the main English candidate, for me, and for me to know that he hasn’t even been called is very surprising.”

Howe replaced Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager in November 2021 and led the club to 11th place in the Premier League in his first season in charge.

Newcastle qualified for the Champions League by finishing fourth the following season, with Howe also guiding the Magpies to the Carabao Cup final, where they were defeated by Manchester United.

The 46-year-old came under some pressure last season but the Toon finished seventh after winning six out of ten at the end of the campaign.
