Sofia Richie reveals she was hospitalized with preeclampsia after welcoming a baby girl

Sofia Richie revealed she was hospitalized with pre-eclampsia two days after giving birth to her and husband Elliot Grainge’s baby Eloise in May.

“I went home and flew up like a balloon. It literally just swelled up,” the socialite said on the “She MD” podcast Tuesday.

“I felt really sick… So he sent his wonderful nurse over and my blood pressure was 165 over 103.”

Podcast co-host Dr. Thais Aliabadi chimed in, saying the condition Richie, 26, was suffering from was called “postpartum preeclampsia.”

According to the Mayo Clinic, postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition that occurs when you have high blood pressure and excess protein in your urine soon after giving birth.

Sofia said she “hid in the closet and cried” at the thought of having to leave her newborn to go back to hospital because of his pain and swelling.

“My poor husband said, ‘I have to take you to the hospital because the doctor says it’s not safe.’ It’s not safe for you to be home,’” he recalled. “So I spent 24 hours in the hospital and it was really, really, really hard.”

Richie said her “mommy guilt kicked in” because she didn’t want to “miss a moment” of her daughter’s first days after the birth. He also admitted that he didn’t want anyone else to deal with Eloise.

“That was another thing we talked about in the hospital. Like, ‘Yeah, I feel very blessed and lucky to be able to have people to help me and to be able to have support, but I’m also not interested in someone raising the my son,” he added.

“I wouldn’t have had a child if I wasn’t ready to take it on. So it’s been my mother’s fault to balance those two things.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Richie revealed that she had experienced contractions for six weeks before giving birth.

“At 32 weeks, I woke up and said, ‘Hey, I woke up and I’m really tired today.’ My back hurts a lot. I feel a little crampy,’” he recalled. “And I really thought it was going to be another one of those, ‘Yeah, baby, this is pregnancy.’ You’ll be fine, but you can come in if you want me to check out your kind of situations.”

Instead, the model said she sought help from a fetal specialist, who informed her she was in “active labor.”

Richie had to spend six days in the hospital until he begged to come home.

For six weeks, Richie had contractions while on bed rest until doctors induced her at 38 weeks.

“I had a fantastic delivery,” he shared.
