‘I Was Like, F–k Yeah’: Keanu Reeves Reveals What Sold Him on Speed After Initially Rejecting It

That of Jan de Bont speed is undeniably one of the best action movies out there in their high-octane race for survival aboard a bomb-ridden bus. Not to mention, the stellar casting of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock helped make this 90s movie even more memorable. However, that duo almost didn’t exist, considering Reeves initially turned down the part of Jack Traven, but the actor shared a brutal explanation of what ultimately sold him.

Those feelings were recently renewed for the cast and crew who attended the action thriller’s 30th anniversary screening at the Egyptian Theatre. There (via THR), The Matrix the actor revealed what made him reverse his earlier decision to say no, explaining:

I read the second draft and the next draft and I was like, oh yeah, okay…this could be fun. I met this crazy genius (in Jan de Bont) and I was like, ‘Oh shit, that’s a director. This is a person with vision. This is someone who has a passion for this story.’ At the time, I guess what struck me was the cinematographer of Die Hard. That he shot it, I said, “Shit, yeah.”

I can’t say I blame Keanu Reeves in that regard, since Die Hard inspired so many swashbuckling action heroes in his wake. according to EWthe Canadian actor was not blown away by the script as he described his character of Jack as “fragile”, believing he delivered a line that felt “forced”.

Jan de Bont considered Reeves’ suggestions by talking to From Buffy the Vampire Slayer Joss Whedon has to make changes to the script to make Jack more serious compared to the original comedy approach. Fortunately, the bill and ted the actor’s instincts about the character were right, and these script changes were apparently exactly what Jack needed.

with Die Hard being the type of movie buffs watch again and againit is not surprising that speed would have the same effect on an audience. Everything about Jan de Bont’s film was exciting, considering the originality of his action film because the action never stopped, meaning the audience never knew what was going to happen next.

The moment Jack gets on the bomb-laden bus, you know you’re in for some action-packed fun. Also, who could forget the scene when the bus makes that big jump over the freeway? De Bont was truly a genius, as Reeves said, to be able to shoot these memorable action sequences. Let’s ease into this domain below:

It’s definitely hard to imagine speed without Keanu Reeves. The action movie was one of them The best Reeves performances of the 90s by making Jack Traven tough but very real. You can also call the Point Break the character of the actor is a real spray to put his life on the line to save that bus on his day off. He was enjoying his free time drinking coffee when a bus exploded behind him. The LAPD officer could have avoided the action if he had wanted to. Instead, he chose to be a hero from start to finish.
