Novak Djokovic reveals how Jannik Sinner reminds him of himself after Shanghai clash

Novak Djokovic reveals how Jannik Sinner reminds him of himself after Shanghai clash

Novak Djokovic highlighted the similarities he sees between himself and Jannik Sinner following his defeat by the Italian in the final of the 2024 Shanghai Masters.

The 37-year-old tennis legend said Sinner has “all the chops” and praised the way the world No. 1 is able to suffocate opponents by taking time.

Djokovic lost 6-7(4), 3-6 to Sinner in the Shanghai final to suffer his first loss in a title match at the four-time Masters 1000 tournament.

Sinner’s all-around game, baseline excellence and dynamic movement have drawn comparisons to the legendary Serbian.

The 23-year-old is level with Djokovic at 4-4 after winning the pair’s previous three meetings and four of their last five.

Jannik Sinner becomes the first player to achieve a remarkable feat against Novak Djokovic with Shanghai victory

In his press conference after the final, Djokovic was asked if any part of Sinner’s game reminded him of himself.

“Everywhere, you know, every time he has in the game,” said the Serbian. “He’s improved his serve tremendously, I think he’s become a great weapon.

“He is very aggressive from the baseline, as soon as he has a shorter ball, he takes the initiative. Just very solid from the forehand and return, doesn’t make too many mistakes and just tries to take time out of the opponent.

“That’s something that reminds me of myself throughout my career, that’s what I’ve done for so many years consistently, you know, play fast-paced tennis, take time out of the opponent, suffocate the opponent , if you want. in a certain way.

“That’s what you want, you want your opponents to always feel pressured by your shots, by your speed, by your presence on the court. So there you have it. I mean, it’s been so consistent this year, it’s really impressive.”

During the Shanghai trophy presentation, Djokovic congratulated Sinner and his team, which includes his former fitness coach Marco Panichi and former physio Ulises Badio.

“Congratulations Jannik. Today was too good. Too strong. Too fast. You’re having an amazing year.

“Congratulations also to Jannik’s team. Well done guys. I know a couple of guys there, familiar faces. It’s a great team.”

Sinner hired Panichi and Badio last month to replace physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi and fitness coach Umberto Ferrara, who were involved in his failed anti-doping tests.
