Tracker reveals what happened to Robin Weigert’s character after Star left

After debuting in the coveted post-Super Bowl slot earlier this year, follower became a huge hit for CBS. Justin Hartley’s procedural drama had only been gaining steam heading into Sunday night’s Season 2 premiere, but there was a small hiccup for the cast en route to its return. During the summer there was the news that Robin Weigert, one of the few regulars of the series follower in its first season (and the most seasoned TV veteran in the cast), would not return for Season 2.

Throughout the first season of followerWeigert played Teddi Bruin, one of Colter Shaw’s (Justin Hartley) handlers and close friends. He operated as one half of a duo alongside his wife, Velma (Abby McEnany), bringing new jobs and information to Colter when possible.

Part of what made the news of Weigert’s exit so strange was the fact that McEnany was staying on as a series regular, so Velma would be operating in Season 2 without Teddi. Keeping Velma around requires a more detailed explanation of the character’s absence, and follower offered one such explanation during Sunday night’s season 2 premiere.

Early in the premiere, Velma calls Colter with a new job, prompting him to ask how Teddi is doing. Velma alludes to the fact that Teddi stays with her mother, taking care of her due to some kind of health or family issue. He also hints that this situation could strain their relationship.

“She’s going to be there for a while. She’s helping her mom get settled,” Velma tells Colter. When asked about going back and forth, Velma adds, “I was…getting in the way, you could say. It wasn’t really good, so I went back.”

What’s nice about this approach, at least for Teddi fans, is that it leaves the door open for Weigert’s character to come back at any time and fit into the story. Meanwhile, Velma is not completely alone. The premiere takes place in Chicago with Reenie (Fiona Rene), setting up the office of her new firm. Keeping these two together for at least part of the season keeps some of the bigger supporting characters going follower involved in each other’s stories. It also prevents them from existing as characters on Colter’s phone and laptop, opening up more narrative options for everyone involved.

To this point, there has been no word on whether there are any future plans for Weigert to return to the cast.
