Veteran journalist Hoda Kotb announced her departure from Today’s show during a broadcast several weeks ago, to the disappointment of fans. And that’s understandable, given that viewers are truly about to witness the end of an era. Colleagues of the 60-year-old media personality also have thoughts on the matter. Reports suggested that another NBC employees were shocked for the announcement. However, co-host Savannah Guthrie shared a different view as she explained why she wasn’t all that “surprised” by Kotb’s decision.

Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb have been co-anchors today since 2018 and in that time they seem to have gotten pretty close. Guthrie, 52, spoke about his friend and colleague’s recent announcement while chatting with people. While she admitted she was “surprised” by Kotb’s choice of action, she apparently wasn’t that surprised because of the personal chats they’ve had over the years:

Well, I would say I was surprised but I wasn’t surprised because she and I have had many, many conversations about life and what that means in our hopes and our dreams, and I knew that 60 was a big time and where she think a lot about how he wants to spend the rest of the day. So I wasn’t surprised. … But then when it happened, of course, I was happy for her because I think it’s so brave and bold and amazing and this kind of confidence in herself and her bright future that she’s writing, and she’s writing it.

During the broadcast in which she announced her plan to leave NBC’s flagship morning show after 17 years, Hoda Kotb attributed the move to personal reasons. Specifically, she wants to spend more time with her two young daughters, Haley Joy (7) and Hope Catherine (5). (One detail of Kotb’s revelation that you may have missed (it’s that she wore a bedazzled “M” necklace, which stands for mother.) While Guthrie admitted to being “sad” that her on-air partner is stepping away from the news desk, she also expressed hope for the future:

I’ll hold on to it. I have my Carson (Daly) and Craig (Melvin). The whole crew.

While the NBC data line alum will no longer be on the air following his early departure in the middle of the 2025 TV scheduleshe won’t leave the web entirely. He is apparently about to take on a new role that has yet to be revealed. Meanwhile, speculation abounds as to who might replace the today co-host. Sources have alleged that the most likely candidate appears to be Laura Jarrett, who presents the Saturday editions of the said program.

There are still questions on that front, but mostly, it looks like Savannah Guthrie is happy that Hoda Kotb is staying on the show for now. surely, fans, which Kotb shouted after their big news, they will also appreciate the time they have left to see the media personality todaybefore it officially closes.
