Social media reacts to Elon Musk’s Optimus robots designed to help with housework • Hollywood Unlocked

On Thursday, Elon Musk showed off his army of $30,000 Tesla Optimus robots, designed to help families with chores and more. Videos circulating online reveal these shocking yet impressive robots, prompting a lively reaction from social media users.

In a viral clip, the robots are seen walking in single file across a stage, while spectators stand on the sidelines, gasping in amazement. Musk mentioned that attendees would be able to approach Optimus robots, which would perform tasks such as serving drinks. While many people are excited to witness the advanced technology, it inevitably led to comparisons to the classic movie “I, Robot.”

“I, Robot” is a science fiction film set in a future where humanoid robots are integrated into society. The story follows detective Del Spooner, who investigates a murder that appears to have been committed by a robot, defying the notion of its programmed obedience. The film raises questions about artificial intelligence, autonomy and the potential risks associated with advanced robotics, themes that echo contemporary discussions surrounding Elon Musk’s latest endeavors in robotics and AI, especially its focus on ensuring safety and ethical considerations in the midst of rapidly advancing technology.

Comparisons arise from both the cinematic depiction of robots and the real-world implications of developing intelligent machines capable of making decisions.

Tesla has previously described its robots as “a bipedal, general-purpose humanoid robot capable of performing unsafe, repetitive, or boring tasks.” At the Oct. 10 event, Musk stated, “What can it do? It will do whatever you want it to do.” He explained, “He can be a teacher, babysit your kids. He can walk your dog, mow your lawn, do the grocery shopping, just be your friend, serve drinks. Whatever you can think of, he’ll do it.”
