Outer Banks Reveals One of the Pogues’ True Identities in Season 4 Finale – Read Recap

one of Foreign Banks‘Central teenagers are not the person we thought they were.

The finale of Season 4, Part 1 contains a huge revelation: JJ’s father, Luke, is not his real father. (Ugh, AMIRITE?) JJ’s first sign that something is up comes when Genrette’s staff, Demp, arrives with an envelope addressed to “Master JJ Maybank” that he was instructed to give to the teenager “in case for something to happen.” Considering that Genrette is now dead, it seems that something has happened. JJ reads the missive, scribbles a hasty note about having to run an errand, leaves it on Twinkie’s windshield, then runs to his boat.

JJ meets up with one of Luke’s friends, lying that he has something of his father’s to sell, and asking the man for Luke to contact him. It’s a decoy, and Luke takes it…only as he knocks, a barking dog in the background tells JJ that his father is hiding nearby. When they come face to face, JJ shows the letter to his father and asks him to explain what the references to “albatross” and “don’t delay” mean. Because Luke is a giant piece of trash, he lies and says he doesn’t know…but when the cops come, remember, he offers to tell JJ everything if he just gets him out of there via the boat .

After the authorities have escaped, Luke takes JJ to the top of the lighthouse to let him know that the Albatross was the name of the ship Larissa Genrette died on. “I guess the old man figured it out,” he says. “I’m not your blood father, J… I’m not your father. Not by blood, anyway.” (“Or whatever measures Child Protective Services would have,” I mutter.)

But it’s not over. “The person you thought was your mother,” Luke continues, “was just my girlfriend. Your real mother? Larissa Genrette.” As a crippled JJ tries to absorb all this world-shaking information, he wonders aloud who his biological father is. “Isn’t it obvious?” Luke replies.

And just in case it’s not, the episode cuts to a scene of Chandler Groff, Genrette’s creepy son-in-law, arm-in-arm with Hollis, Rafe’s swindling cougar.

What are the rest of Pogues doing while all this is going on? They dispose of Terrence’s body—Cleo praises her former partner before they bury him at sea—and then head to Charleston, following the amulet’s directions. They eventually realize that the blue crown might be in a crypt under a church, so after some really crazy choices (cutting through the floor in the sanctuary, for example), Pope and Sarah end up going down into the crypt to find the coffin. where the artifact could be hidden.

While John B. is outside watching, he sees Lightner and the British woman there. The adults enter the crypt through an above-ground tomb they unlock with the amulet, causing Sarah and Pope to approach the hiding places as the mice crawl over them. Lightner and his boss grab a scroll from a coffin and then leave, locking the tomb above the ground on their way out. And when it starts to rain outside, Pope and Sarah realize that the way they came in is also closed…and the water is quickly rising into the catacombs where they’re trapped. Pope notices that the barnacles on the walls go up to the ceiling, indicating that “this place is going to fill up,” he says in horror.

And that’s where we’ll leave these treasure-hunting teenagers until part two arrives on Thursday, November 7th. Until then, Weigh in on the midseason finale using the poll below, then hit the comments with all your thoughts, including your predictions for the second half of Season 4.
