Cripple Creek community reacts to Cripple Creek Mine Tour malfunction

CRIPPLE CREEK: The reaction from this community is concern, fear and hope.

Shane Hansford has lived in Cripple Creek since the 1990s. He tells News5 he’s toured the gold mine and gone down this shaft.

“I’d be petrified. It’s 1,000 feet, I mean, you travel down there fast. I haven’t been there in years and I know it’s pitch black; they turn off all the lights. So I probably would. Be freaked out right now,” he said.

We talked to a lot of people, including Marilyn Callhan, who has lived in Cripple Creek for 20 years.

He tells us he has confidence in the crews working to help rescue those trapped 1,000 feet underground.

“I just hope that whatever it is, they can get these people out. I think they can; there’s so much technology now.”

People here in Cripple Creek say they just want the 12 people trapped out safely and as soon as possible.

“Hurry up. Let’s go. Take them out,” Hansford said.

Cripple Creek is also a town that depends on tourism. The residents tell us how they are now worried about what the future holds for their city.
