Orange, Hillsborough Rural Fire Department responds to gas main “break” along W. King Street

The Orange Rural Fire Department is responding to a gas main leak near downtown Hillsborough Thursday morning.

A Facebook post from the fire department at 11:43 a.m. said firefighters are responding to a “break” in a main near West King Street at South Occoneechee Street. Emergency services are closing the intersection and asking people to avoid the area. The city of Hillsborough later confirmed the leak and said residents in the neighborhood should not return to their homes due to the leak.

According to the city government, the break is in a 6-inch gas line and repairs are expected to last until Thursday evening, with the initial estimate shared at 9:00 p.m.

The intersection is in a residential area and borders the city-owned pocket park, Turnip Patch Park, which is about three blocks from downtown Hillsborough. Traffic maps showed first responders limiting access to both West King Street and West Margaret Lane at Churton Street during the initial response on Thursday, as well as West King Street at Hayes Street.
