VMware Releases VeloRAIN, Using AI/ML to Improve Network Performance

That’s where VeloRAIN will come in.

“VeloRAIN is the foundation of our AI networking innovation, powering our entire portfolio to better meet the demands of enterprise AI workloads,” Sanjay Uppal, vice president and general manager, VeloCloud Division, Broadcom, said in a statement. “By leveraging VeloRAIN’s advanced capabilities, AI workloads from distributed inference and peer-to-peer agent applications to heavy upstream RAG transactions will see improved QoE (Quality of Experience) and application-based security across all enterprise endpoints .”

VeloRAIN capabilities

VeloRAIN’s capabilities will include AI application detection using AI and ML, even if application traffic is encrypted, to enable quality of service (QoS) and QoE for leading AI applications, the company said. It will provide channel estimation information for wireless cellular or satellite connections to help enable what Broadcom called “fiber-like QoS in the face of dynamically changing network conditions.”

In addition, new applications will be automatically identified and assigned business priorities to ensure critical applications receive the attention they need without manual intervention.

Dynamic Application-Based Slicing, or DABS, will ensure per-application QoE across multiple disparate underlying networks, regardless of whether they support cutting the network layer or not, Uppal said during a press conference. DABS also includes user profiles, so traffic can be prioritized based on a user’s identity.

“One of the things we’ve found in measuring AI applications is that the reason this all makes sense now, and the importance of doing this for AI, is that the applications themselves are wildly different,” he said. “And they are different because the models are different. The way they use the network is different. They are very explosive. They are very sensitive to latency.”
