West Street reopens after two months of closure

A road in the city center that was closed for more than two months due to a sinkhole has reopened.

Thames Water said on Monday that work to install around 34m (112ft) of new surface water drainage in Dorking had been completed.

The sinkhole forced the closure of West Street when it occurred on August 30.

Since then, Thames Water has identified itself several pipes in need of repair – partly caused by debris that fell from an initial collapse and other structural problems in the masonry, a spokesman said.

They said the initial collapse was caused by third-party utility work.

After discussions with Surrey County Council, the decision was made to return in 2025 to complete the additional repairs required.

“We feel it is important to note that due to the nature of these works it will be necessary to close West Street again for the next phase of these works,” the spokesperson continued.

“However, we would like to assure you that we will give you advance notice of these works when they are due to commence.”

The risk of further problems with the sewer was low, but if there were problems, we may need to “accelerate repair and work under emergency conditions,” the water company said.

Business affected by the road closure can make claims for loss of business to Thames Water.
